We’re poised and ready…

Ready for the shifting mirage of 5kt variables. Predictions and forecasts coming and going with varying degrees of accuracy lately. It’s been typically winter weather, mostly windy but every now and then an absolutely stunning day – one out of the box. Let’s go fishing!

The Firth of Thames has started to perk up in terms of fishing. Although it’s still a little early for actual Spring style action.

Gt Barrier fish action has quietened down from its peak of a few weeks ago. However there’s still plenty of snapper from 50m out though. Just drift fish for pannies, it’s easy stuff.
Kayakers have been doing exceptionally well. Their stealth fishing in areas right along shorelines is perfect for picking up solid ‘resident’ snapper here and there. Soft baits have been the go with ultra light jigheads when possible, but strong enough line! 20lb braid has been a good bet.
Inshore bursts of bird life dive-bombing the shallows with fish frenzies below are seemingly randomly popping up around the Hauraki Gulf coastlines. But they’re here one day, gone the next. Nature’s spotter planes (gannets) are focusing on their single egg due around now, both parents fulfilling nesting duties for 6 weeks. Then it’ll be onto the feeding requirements.
Small swells roll in after another low pressure system abandons the New Zealand eastern coastline and the tempting promises of a pending High with still winds and fine weather for fishing approaches. And so does a full moon which brings only a little tidal movementย  – I wonder what the fish think of that!?
Only one way to find out – time to go fishing!
