Perfect table sized snapper abound around the Hauraki Gulf at the moment.

These snapper are ready to steadily feed a lot of the time, making for very pleasing fishing for everyone.

Anchoring or drifting in the open areas is productive in terms of bringing home perfect table sized snapper for the family dinner table. Not huge sizes but great eating in that 35-45cm range, and in 35-45m water depth.

Drop your kabura to the sea floor and use a very slow wind to retrieve until it is about 1 to 3 metres above the floor. Then drop the kabura back down again. Make sure your drag is nice and light so that the line will feed out easily. Don’t strike, just lift the rod and keep winding, applying more drag if necessary. The razor sharp hooks will set themselves.

Some good sized snapper and kingfish are being caught in Whangaparaoa bay more in towards Kawau. There were also good sized fish in and around the Noises earlier in the week – just before this storm hit.

Workups are here and there, some good looking ones have been northern Tiri, when the dolphins arenโ€™t just playing and showing their young ones around the entire gulf on a grand tour. These are great to see and experience however of little help to fishermen.

Skipjack tuna have been around the SE area of Little Barrier, hopefully a bit of a silver lining in the cloud of these thumping easterly winds. Eeven warmer water in the gulf will help bring these fish closer in, enough to provide more fun fishing.

Windy weather can mean some relaxing time sorting various boat and fishing tackle repairs and maintenance. And maybe a bit of a reward from the tackle shop I reckon.
