Hardcore Wellington fisherman Jason Grimmetโ€™s been making the most of his opportunities with recent hauls of terakihi, gurnard, blue cod, kingfish and snapper. A trip to Fiji, however, was the icing on the cake.

Recently working Barrettโ€™s Reef, Jasonโ€™s enjoyed plenty of kingfish success, with fish ranging from 110cm to 130cm. Most of these fish came by virtue of the 150gr Catch Boss in Ballistic Blue.

Another trip just out from Moa Point produced terakihi on the green seducer micro-jig and solid gurnard on the always hot orange kabura.

Further out in 100m nice big blue cod were all over the blue beta-bugs. Slighter deeper again in 160m something large swallowed a modified lumo pink Squidwings, never to be seen again.

Adrenalin in Fiji

Spending two full days with Adrenalin Charters in Fiji, Jasonโ€™s luck was still running hot. Plenty of yellowfin graced the deck thanks to trolled Squidwingsย and huge wahoo strike made short work of the 400lb monofilament leader.

A couple of yellowfin were taken while popper fishing with the new Catch Top-Water rod, probably the most exciting way to target this fish species. A new popper lure didnโ€™t make it back home safely after being smashed by a much larger yellowfin Jason was unable to stop.

Jigging the coral bommies with a big green Squidwings produced an estimated 15 โ€“ 20kg red snapper or coral trout. Unfortunately, the fish was blown off the hook by prop wash.

Further jigging with Betabugs produced plenty of coral trout and spotted groper so Jason was pretty stoked with the trip in general.

Whatโ€™s happening now

Local kayak fishing around Kapiti and Titahi Bayโ€™s producing Autumn snapper, terakihi, cod and kingfish as well as a 3.5 metre bronzie. That fish proved a handful on the yak.
