As most of the Melbourne fishing community goes into hibernation over Winter, there aren’t many quality reports to find but Ben Pinneger kindly sent us a brief summary of the highlights, as follows:

For many dedicated anglers, the bulk of the chatter and planning is focused on tunaย opportunities out of Portland.ย To be fair, it’s been firing with plenty of school fish to 35-kg landed. There’s a few barrels amongst them with reports of fish to 135-kg relatively common.

Those keen enough to brave Port Phillip Bay and WesternPortย have been rewardedย with solid catches of squid – almost any jig in the arsenal seems to working.

Personally, I’m heading down to Gippsland this weekend, as this one is shaping up as the first decent one in weeks. I’ll be looking for bream and big Winter flathead. Hopefully I’ll have plenty to say with decent pics next week.

Ben Pinneger.
