Catching snapper, it’s what we all love doing and they’re probably the most common catch of many of us. But how can we catch them when they don’t want to bite?

Breeding has dominated the snapper front lately. Although the daytime bite has been slower than weโ€™d like, the evening and night bite has been the better time to be out targeting those big reds. Whether you prefer to fish the Waitemata shallows of downtown Auckland and its environs for a few tasty pannies late evening, or chase those workups north of Tiri – the snapper have been spending most of their time not feeding This is when the tantilising temptations of the genuine Kaburaย  will ensure a greater hook-up rate. Remember a very light drag setting initiates more hook-ups. The 25gm Micro Jigs have also been the way to come home with more fresh snapper, rather than bigger offerings which are often being ignored at the moment.

Juvenile kingfish schools have been flashing through southern Rangitoto and Waitemata harbour areas, as well as some nice pan sized snapper. These are both great fun on light tackle, and the lighter the tackle the more hook-ups.

The full moon passes over on Friday, which should enhance our abilities to catch more fish!
