Winter Fishing – it sure is what you make it, the fishing has been fantastic!

Kingfish are into the shallows right now. A number of shorelines around the gulf from Gt Barrier to North Shore Bays have had large schools of kingies hounding baiftish into <1m of water. The kingfish dorsal fins clearly out of the water as they chase after their next meal. So wherever you see surface activity, lots of birds and especially the tell-tale swirl of a kingfish or haku just breaking the water tension itโ€™s worth to target the green machines. Top water lures work wonders in this scenario. Further out in amongst the workups, the kings are there too. A 200gm jig fast retrieved from the sea floor, on good tackle, is the go.

Snapper are hibernating a little more with the further drop in sea temperature. Workups, burley, change of light โ€“ the usual winter approaches are all working very well right now. Solid snapper are being caught in all sort of places, many again rightย along shorelines. Intense workups around northern Tiri have held a lot of fun loving kahawai and good standard pannie sized snapper. Further afield past Flat Rock and Kawau more action abounds as well, also over in the northern Happy Jacks area. If and when the weather allows, out deeper (50+)ย has held good snapper in the 10-18lb bracket, along with the bigger kingfish when you get the timing right (in terms of bite time).

No matter what sized boat you (or a mate!) has got, or land based fishing โ€“ winter fishing is turning it on for us.

Enjoy!
