When it comes to fishing this week, Barriers aren’t what you think… Fishing between Little and Great Barrier has seen some very good action and sizeable fish being caught.

Fieldays often means thereโ€™ll be inclement weather – but itโ€™s fishable weather! It has been tough to turn the car key on for many Aucklanders in the early morning light, heading bleary eyed towards the car queues aka motorways. More so even harder for the North Shore residents lately as a glance seaward can cause momentary disbelief and an extra eye rub or two, birds working baitschools. Petrels by their thousands along with terns and some gannets have been materialising in various spots along the city coastline, amped up by the baitfish below. A sight for sore eyes alright and perhaps even a barrier to a positive work attitude for the day.

Thereโ€™s a big tidal current running at the moment, so expect choppier conditions when wind is against tide. However when these two factors align the sea calms considerably. Outgoing tide on the souโ€™west winds makes for smooth seas out from that North Shore area for instance.

If you can keep the Barriers in mind โ€“ between Little and Great Barrier has seen some very good action and sizeable fish being caught. Both snapper and kingfish. Surface activity leads the way here.

Mid ground around the 42-44m chart depth drift fishing has been very pleasant indeed. Subdue the drift speed with a sea anchor or two and enjoy slow โ€˜n steady wins the race style fishing. Soft baits and micro jigs are doing well, and donโ€™t forget to try dragging them well behind the boat grubbing along in the mud, itโ€™s been working well lately.

The fish are in great condition, time to bring some home.

Enjoy your fishing.
