Mo say’s…
Many people are heading much further out in the Hauraki Gulf than necessary. It’s been hit and miss out wide recently so those keen to burn less gas for a catch might consider fishing their feet first.
For Mo, this approach has been paying off big time. There’s plenty of fat snapper mooching around 10-minutes from his local boat ramp, in six to eight-metres of water.
Even though anchored due to the fresh breezes last weekend, Mo’s preferred softbait approach, cast and retrieved up the current took a nice 45cm snap on the first shot.
Berleying to get the baitfish around helped get the snapper feeding consistently and the fish remained on the chew even after the trail ran out.
Mo used softbaits on a ¼ ounce Stingaz jig head with the occasional mackerel head to mix it up. Both the bait and the softbait worked well with the softies catching the consistently bigger fish.
The cut baits seemed to outperform the whole pillies or yellowtail. This probably attests to the need for a bit of extra smell in the shallower water where visibility is often lower.
Mo’s crew fished the entire incoming tide with the bite coming in waves until about two hours before the high tide when it peaked.
In Mo’s view, there’s no need to move far when the bite slows down. Just get that berley working and wait until it fires up again. Keep casting and covering the water!
