Oh how we love getting out and using the stunning summer fishing conditions to our advantage. Five knot variables, a sea surface so glassy it reflects like a mirror, and longer evenings to extend the fishing trip.

Majestic Orca graced the northern Noises area this week. Incredibly captivating to watch especially when itโ€™s 5kt variable winds on a mercury-smooth sea. These mammals are show stoppers alright, not only for us but also the fish. Any bite that was happening in the vicinity (good mackerel schools with some predatory attendants) just stopped in its tracks. C’est la vie – you win some, you lose some.

Where’s The Fish?

Further afield has been the best bet in terms of snapper catching consistency in the gulf. The mid ground was deserted there for a while, void of fish and bird life for a time it seemed. Consequently Little Barrier and the top of Coromandel western side have been the hot-ish spots while a lot of the middle gulf paused, no manโ€™s land. Solid snapper and kingfish are in both these areas. Be prepared with the good gear, weakness will be used against you.

Marlin have had a rest from the hum of many boats out there – due to the high wind speed of late. They have earned it with dozens (yes dozens!) of marlin being tagged out from Gt Barrier last weekend in a competition. Imagine living in Auckland, and heading out for a dayโ€™s fishing, marlin fishing. A couple of rods, a couple of luresโ€ฆ

Jet skiers speed has paid off with recent fleeting weather windows.ย  Some donโ€™t even look open but opportunities for a few quick hours with calmness is possible. With a bit of lateral thinking, not always at your go-to spot x, the advantages of smaller fishing craft like jet skis and kayaks are being shown off more and more. Bait-free tackle, lighter stronger rods and reels particularly suited to this style of fishing are the go โ€“ and the success is a real eye opener.

Many land-based anglers are undertaking summer evening fishing, and rightly so. Snapper and kingfish reside in estuaries and around wharves. Whether fishing in highly populated areas or well out off the beaten track it is a great time of year to be enjoying a landbased session or two. The air temperatures are good, so why not an evening shoreline session solo or with a mate.
