Inshore kahawai and kings are playing the game. Some so close to shorelines land based fishermen could easily cast past them!

There’s incredible scenes of the sea surface coming alive with baitfish being rounded up into the shallows by hungry packs of kingfish, eager to feed. Kahawai crowd in on the attack, sometimes however it can be a kingfish only feast. This is such outstanding visual fishing.

Baitfish seem to be in plentiful supply, judging by the dolphin feeding activity at times. Other times thereโ€™s a conspicuous absence of fish. Winter, when the bite is either all On, or distinctly Off.

Workups

Winter workups sure are a treat and when the weather is even half good enough, itโ€™s time to be out there chasing down the action. Whales, dolphins, gannets and fish โ€“ snapper and kingfish have been feeding well this week with sizeable workups popping up all over the place 46m Waiheke north, Flat Rock and southern Great Barrier have all had their fair share of this adrenaline style of fishing.

Whether you’re chasing the workups or drifting along getting the lures hard on the sea floor,ย  you’ll get into some good snapper.

Thereโ€™s a multitude of species to target as the sea temperature continues to dwindle, Carpe Diem, seize the day.

Cheers,

Espresso.
