target bigger snapper

The wonderful winter fishing craziness continues. Here’s how to target bigger snapper and bigger kingfish!

From the bluefin tuna run off East Cape, to striped marlin off Northland to Skipjack tuna on Catch Fishing double trouble jigs off Whitianga and more, itโ€™s simply awesome right now.

In the Hauraki Gulf the fishing slowed a little around that full moon, but with good pannie snapper, sizeable gurnard and some solid kingfish thrown in โ€“ itโ€™s hard to grumble about the air temperature or anything else for that matter. Later in the day has been the best bite.

Just north of Tiritiri Matangi Island has seen some huge schools of kahawai feeding well, and some rather nice snapper along with them. Further out in 50m, more towards Little Barrier the snapper have been consistent, and a little further, the kingfish have been keen to play as well. I suspect there will be a few days coming when the bite is rather slow, but not every day and when you strike it right, the fish are fighting hard-out and hitting big jigs quick-smart!

A number of sharks are getting a free feed of kingfish all over show, not much you can do other than accept paying your taxes.

Thereโ€™s something extra special about fishing in the cool early morning air as the sun rises and slowly warms the face, and with gurnard kahawai kingfish and snapper to choose from, best head out and target them, they are ready and waiting. In this weekโ€™s video thereโ€™s some good technique tips on how to target and catch both bigger snapper and bigger kingfish.

Cheers
